Assuming that your copy of 4MLinux Live CD is ready, it's time to try it! Some people have a problem to log in into 4MLinux live CD. There is no default password in 4MLinux. You will be asked to choose one during the boot time.
Update:
New versions of 4MLinux LiveCD do not require any password to enter X.Org session, which is started automatically without needing to log in.
You still have to to setup root's password to be able to log in into 4MLinux, that is installed to a hard disk drive.

4MLinux includes limited support for "alien" packages. The following commands should work:
installpkg package.txz (for Slackware packages),
dpkg -i package.deb (for Debian and Ubuntu packages),
rpm -i package.rpm (for Fedora and RedHat packages).
4MLinux native package manager is called "zk".
I don't remember this... It is Fantástic!!! & zk

ReplyDeleteAre you trying to run X in 4MLinux Core ?
Deletehttp://4mlinux.blogspot.com/2013/07/4mlinux-releases.html
Ok, I got 4mlinux from Linux format. I'm installing the media edition on an SD card to run an HP mini that had the Hard drive die. That hard drive is very expensive.
ReplyDeleteSo, couple questions, is it possible to run this with no passwords?
Can 4mlinux be used to write .dd files to solid state drives? One need I have is to restore the DOM on some thin clients. Windows XPE originally installed. Have a fellow I am trying to do this for.
I have a LOT of computer experience, but little Linux experience, and none with 4mlinux till right now.
These are my current prime projects.
Oh, and why does it use Wine to load Firefox for windows instead of Firefox for linux?
My only other plans for this for now are to add Teamviewer and Skype. But first I get it running.
Have a look here: http://4mlinux.blogspot.com/2013/01/welcome-to-4mlinux-blog.html
Delete"My only other plans for this for now are to add Teamviewer and Skype". Even advanced Linux users would have to have a little time to figure out how to get it work in 4MLinux.
To be quite honest, 4MLinux may NOT be the best choice for your plans... Good luck :-)
Thanks. I do need an OS suitable for smaller systems, as it will run in ram. Also, I have other, older and slower computers I want to work with. So, maybe I will have to keep looking.
DeleteSo 4MLinux (especially its main edition, which is only 50 MB in size) can be very good solution for that !
DeleteIn my first answer above I meant that adding new programs (which are not available out of the box) might be not easy. On the other hand you have Wine in 4MLinux, so Win32 ("exe") applications can be installed very easily :-)
Well, 4MLinux looks promising, However, When I try to test it in Virtualbox, I get a "kernel panic not syncing error". I kind of have this policy that if I can't test a distro in vbox, then it is not worth testing. Soooo, how do I get 4mLinux to run in Vbox ???
ReplyDeleteroadhog293@hushmail.com
There may be 14512 reasons :-) You must learn of lot how to report errors. To cut a long story short, you should give as many details as possible (such as 4MLinux version, Virtual Box version, what system as you are running). Knowing that, a developer can try to reproduce the error reported by you. Next, he can try to fix it.
DeletePS.
All 4MLinux screenshots you can see at Softpedia and Distrowatch are taken using Virtual Box!
I have the same problem. I tried 4MLinux-10.0.iso on two different machines:
Delete1. Windows 7 32bit, Virtualbox 4.3.10
2. Ubuntu 12.04 32bit VirtualBox 4.3.18
Results identical! It goes through all settings - did not help!

Well... I had no problem to run 4MLinux with your settings. How much RAM does your computer has (a real one, not a virtual one) ?
DeleteIs there a way to get it to need less memory? I only have 512 mb on the Dell Inspiron 8100 Laptop and am getting an out of memory kernel panic quite a ways into the boot.
ReplyDeleteYou have enough RAM to run the basic version of 4MLinux (see: www.4mlinux.com/download.html).
ReplyDeleteAdditionally, after installing 4MLinux to your hard disk drive, you will be able to update it to its full version by executing "zk update" in your terminal (fully automatic process).
Good luck :-)
Thanks for the reply. I downloaded it a burned a flashdrive with Unetbootin and it is able to boot now, but X windows won't start. I tried all 3 boot options with same result. I looked at the log and:
ReplyDeleteits got an odd error "systemd-logind: failed to get session: The name org.freedesktop.login1 was not provided by any .service files"
but i think the big problem is that it can't find the "nouveau" driver for the nVidia GeForce 2 Go (NV11) video card which can do 800x600, 1024x768, 1280x1024 and 1600x1200 if its got the right drivers. It then fails looking for an "nv" driver, then a "modesetting" driver, and ends up running a "vesa" driver.
Would there be any way to get the nouveau driver loaded? Or do you have a better suggestion? Debian Jessie and Manjaro and antiX MX-14.2 all come up 1600x1200 automatically using nouveau, btw, but as you might guess this machine needs to be running a lightweight OS.
Thanks for any ideas...
You should be able to use the default boot option (without VESA). In this case framebuffer should be enabled automatically during the boot, and next the "fbdev" driver should be loaded by Xorg. Whatever the reason is, framebuffer is not up, so Xorg tries to use the "vesa" driver instead. You may try to force the Linux kernel to load frame buffer by executing one of the two commands "udev" or "restart" (both are 4MLinux specific scripts).
DeleteIf this does not work, you can choose the boot option with VESA framebuffer enabled and "play" with various display resolutions.
Thanks for replying again. I tried booting via default and then running udev. it didn't get any error but didn't appear to do anything. I then tried running restart, which ran some stuff, and then tried to bring up X but was unsuccessful.
DeleteI remember with older kernels I had to put nomodeset on the boot line.
how do I play with the resolutions under the VESA option? Its always been able to get at least 1024 x 768 before with everything.
thanks :)
Ok, I got X windows in 1024 x 768 using the VESA option. Maybe if I can get it installed to the hard drive I might be able to add the nouveau driver?
DeleteYou may get it right now:
Deletehttp://sourceforge.net/projects/linux4m/files/10.0/updates/10.1/addons/xorg/
Installation: "zk addon_xorg-drv-1.16.1.tar.xz"
Making progress....
DeleteI booted it with VESA, set res to 1024x768, got into X, ran the installer, and it was a terminal window that eventually said Done! but didn't close. Eventually I closed it, rebooted under Manjaro (Arch derivative with Grub2), the went to terminal, su to root, ran grub-install /dev/sda, then ran grub-update, which then adds 4M to grub menu on sda9, then reboot, select 4M line and e to edit, change vga=normal to vga=773 because ask isn't valid, then it starts booting, but gets as far as swap, and then starts repeating the message
can't run 'getty': No such file or directory
and locked in endless loop there
Any ideas?
Thanks
Ok, I rebooted under Manjaro and mounted sda9 and went and looked, and basically it doesn't look like the installer ever really finished installing because the only files in /bin are busybox and sh, and the only file in /sbin is init, so there is no getty program anywhere, and my guess is the respawn just keeps trying anyway.
DeleteAny idea what went wrong and how to fix it?
Thanks
It looks that Grub ignores actual Lilo settings when importing them, so it's Grub's bug :-)
Delete4MLinux needs read-write permissions, so try to change the corresponding line in Grub configuration. It should be something like this: "linux /boot/bzImage root=/dev/sda9 rw vga=normal" (the "rw" is important !)
Ok, not sure how to fix that correctly, but for now I just went in and edited the grub.cfg. Got 4M to boot and now running the zk update
Deleteok, the zk update completed, and then i went and added a user bobc and went to /home/bobc and did a wget of the addon_xorg-drv-1.16.1.tar.xz and then from that directory under root ran the zk addon_xorg-drv-1.16.1.tar.xz which appeared to extract things including some nouveau stuff. Then I rebooted, but X doesnt come up and still says nouveau is not found. Any ideas what to check?
Deletethanks :)
PS: when I look in /usr/lib/xorg/modules/drivers i see a file called nouveau_drv there. Note that it does not have a .so extension like the vesa_drv.so file
Delete1) Use "root" account to log in.
Delete2) Tell 4MLinux that you want 3D drivers. You can do it in one click in JWM, or you can execute "3d" in console shell.
X won't start with 3D enabled or disabled. I was able to get it to start with nomodeset nouveau.modeset=0 on the boot which works for antiX MX-14.2, but it was 1024x768.
DeleteWell... It looks that the Linux kernel in 4MLinux does not support your card. Sorry :-(
DeleteYou can still use VESA framebuffer. See the DISPLAY section of the 4MLinux FAQ (http://4mlinux.com/faq.txt)
ok, thanks for trying. One of these days I'll get rid of my old machines

I'm trying to load 4M onto a USB. I've tried with the Mac Linux USB loader but think maybe I'm loading as the wrong base kernel. When I start it up, there seems to be a problem with the Grub. Before that it gives an error loading initial RAM saying that the kernel must be loaded first.
ReplyDeleteFrom there I am left on the GNU screen with a grub> prompt. What did I miss?
Before I go into that ocean of answers, I'm trying to get the enterprise.cfg for 4M. Is it Ubuntu family or Debian?
